Gmail’s latest version Gmail v2019.06.09.253132566 is the newest version of the app and it comes with the new feature. But it is not the true black or AMOLED black, which properly darkens the surface by taking advantage of the OLED displays. Gmail uses dark grey backgrounds for the dark mode and it means that it won’t completely black out everything. However, the user will finally have an option other than to look at the vibrant and white background of Gmail app. But it should also be noted that the new dark mode of Gmail works only in the application’s settings. And there is also no dark mode toggle button or option that can be used to switch on/off the dark mode anytime. Instead, the new dark mode of Gmail will turn on and off on its own whenever the app feels like. It can be because of the reason that the new feature is still a work-in-progress and this might not be a final finished product to begin with. Nonetheless, it is good news for the users who wanted a dark mode for Gmail as well. The new version of Gmail with the dark mode is currently not officially available on the Google Play Store. The interested users who want to try out the new feature can download the Gmail’s new APK from the internet.
Earlier this month, Google had released dark mode for its Google Photos. Google Photos with version 4.17.0.249919200 comes with dark mode, but at the time it wasn’t available for all the users as it was being rolled out in phases. And similar to Gmail’s dark mode, Google Photos too comes with the same dark grey background that darkens the app’s interface and it dials down the colourful aspect of the app as well. Photos too doesn’t use the OLED full black dark mode. Other than Photos, other Google applications such as Google Chrome, Drive, Keep and Auto have already received the dark mode.
